Does this sound familiar? It’s 8.28am and you’re trying to get yourself and the children out the door. The school bell goes at 8.30am, yet one child can’t find their shoes, the other hasn’t packed the school bag, and the third is in the car beeping the horn as they needed to be at school early for a presentation. Whereas, you have a meeting at 9am, your inbox has 17 unread emails before you’ve even had a sip of your lukewarm coffee, and you’re trying to remember whose library day it is and if you handed in the permission slip that needed to be returned two days ago. You glance at your to-do list, laugh (or cry?), and wonder how you’re supposed to keep all the plates spinning without dropping yourself in the process.
If you’re a mum, teacher, business owner, caregiver—or all of the above—then I know you know the feeling. The juggle is very real. And while we wear these many hats with love, pride, and a deep sense of purpose, let’s be honest: sometimes it’s a lot.
What “Balance” Really Looks Like
We hear it all the time—”You just need better balance” or “It’s all about finding the right balance”. But what does that even mean?
Balance isn’t some perfectly divided pie chart where everything gets equal time and attention. Real-life balance looks more like a shifting scale—some days work gets more, some days it’s the kids, and some days (hopefully!) it’s you.
Balance is knowing what matters most right now, and giving yourself permission to adjust. It means knowing when to let some of the ‘balls’ drop, and which ones you need to keep up in the air.
Why the Juggle Feels So Heavy
The reason we often feel like we’re failing at balance is because we’re carrying so much invisible weight:
- The mental load (planning, remembering, anticipating).
- The emotional load (worrying, nurturing, holding space for everyone else).
- The societal load (being “productive,” “present,” and “perfect” all at once).
No wonder we feel exhausted. Burnout isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, mental, and spiritual depletion.
Signs You Might Be Doing Too Much
Let’s do a quick check-in. Are you:
- Constantly tired, even after sleep?
- Snapping at the people you love most?
- Struggling to make decisions, even small ones?
- Feeling resentful, guilty, or like you’re “failing”?
- Craving a moment of silence more than anything?
If you’re nodding along to any of these—first of all, you’re not alone. And second, it might be time to pause and reassess.
Tiny Shifts That Make a Big Difference
You don’t have to overhaul your life. You just need to create small, supportive shifts that bring you back to yourself. Here are a few to start with:
🧘 The Pause Button
Take a mindful breath before responding, reacting, or rushing. Just one (or 5 for those times it’s extra challenging ;)).
🗓️ Time-Block for Sanity
Block out non-negotiables for you—like a walk, a quiet cuppa, or 10 minutes of journaling. Protect it like you would a really important meeting.
🙅♀️ Say No (Without the Guilt)
You’re allowed to decline, cancel, or delegate. “No” is a complete sentence. Once you start holding firm with your boundaries, other people will too.
🤝 Ask for Help
Whether it’s your partner, a friend, or your kids—let them help. You don’t have to do it all alone. And once you ask, you will find people are more than willing to help.
🌿 Create a Daily Anchor
Choose one small, nourishing ritual—a slow coffee, a stretch, a walk outside—and make it yours. Choose what lights you up that day.
You Don’t Need to Earn Rest
Here’s the reframe I wish someone had told me sooner:
You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to prove your worth by how productive or selfless you are.
You are allowed to be a loving mum, a passionate businesswoman, a supportive partner and someone who needs space, softness, and support.
You are not lazy. You are not selfish. You are human.
If you are someone that feels like you need permission to rest, consider this your permission slip – you’re welcome ;) Now go enjoy that break 🙂
You’re Doing Better Than You Think
If today feels like a mess, if the juggle feels heavy, if you’re questioning whether you’re doing a good job—pause.
Breathe.
And remember this: you’re doing better than you think.
You don’t need to get it all “right.”
You just need to come back to what matters, one gentle step at a time.
Remember that every day is different – some days you will feel like you are winning at life, parenting and business. Next you may feel the total opposite. That is the beauty of living. No matter what, take a moment at the end of each day to reflect on what you did well, what you did better, what you are grateful for. The more you start to focus on the positives you are seeing in your daily life, the more grateful you will feel no matter what the day throws at you.
Over to you:
I’d love to know—what helps you when the juggle gets heavy? Do you have a go-to grounding ritual or a trick that brings you back to centre?
