Let’s talk about a word that gets thrown around a lot: mindfulness.
I’ve got a bit of a love-hate relationship with buzzwords—when something gets repeated too often, it tends to lose its impact. And honestly, I fear that’s happening with mindfulness. But I’m here to remind you: there is real power behind this word, and it has the potential to transform your life in the simplest (and most beautiful) ways.
If you’ve been with me for a while—or if you’re brand new here—let me tell you: mindfulness has been a huge part of my personal journey over the past few years. In fact, it’s been so life-changing that I went on to become a Certified Mindfulness Instructor, which has allowed me to share this practice with both children and adults. And let me tell you—it’s a gift that keeps on giving.
So, What Is Mindfulness?
Most people hear the word and immediately picture someone meditating—eyes closed, legs crossed, chanting “ohm.” And sure, that’s one version. But it’s not the whole picture.
At its core, mindfulness is simply being fully present in the moment. It means tuning into what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell—right now. It’s not about fixing anything. It’s about noticing. Grounding. Coming back to yourself.
In a world that’s constantly asking us to go faster, do more, be more… mindfulness gives us permission to slow down. To pause. To just be.
And let’s be real—most of us are in desperate need of that.
Between work, family life, school runs, sports, scrolling, and that never-ending to-do list, it’s no wonder we’re feeling overwhelmed, distracted, and disconnected. Add to that the rising rates of anxiety, stress, and burnout—especially in our young people—and it’s clear: we need a new way forward.
Mindfulness can be part of that shift.
Simple Ways to Start Practicing Mindfulness Today
The good news? You don’t need hours of free time, a meditation cushion, or a trip to Bali to get started. Below are some of my favourite easy, real-life ways to sprinkle mindfulness into your day.
🌬 Breathing (My Favourite One!)
Never underestimate the power of your breath. Deep, intentional breathing calms the mind and soothes the nervous system.
- Basic Breath: Inhale deeply through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Repeat.
- Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 counts → hold for 4 → exhale for 4 → hold for 4.
- Lion’s Breath: Inhale through the nose, then exhale through the mouth with a big audible sigh (bonus points for a lion roar!).
🖐 Touch
- Go barefoot in nature—sand, grass, or water. Bury your toes and feel the earth.
- Try gentle self-massage—tapping or squeezing your shoulders, arms, or face.
- Explore texture—run your hands over a smooth stone, a soft fabric, or even tree bark.
👃 Smell
- Breathe in the scent of nature—rain in the air, salt at the beach, flowers in bloom.
- Use essential oils—rub a drop on your palms, bring hands to your nose, and inhale slowly.
👀 Sight
- Take time to really see—notice the veins in a leaf, the way branches sway, or the movement of the ocean.
- Pick one object and study it for a few moments without distraction.
👂 Hearing
- Play music you love. Close your eyes and just
- Step outside and tune in—birds, wind, waves, footsteps.
👅 Taste
- Try mindful eating. Observe your food before eating. Then chew slowly, noticing each flavour, texture, and sensation.
💃 Movement
- Dance like no one’s watching—literally. Let your body move freely. Feel into the rhythm.
- Try simple stretches or yoga. Even 5–10 minutes of intentional movement can ground you.
🧘♀️ Meditation
- There’s no “right” way. It can be long or short, seated or lying down, guided or free.
- Don’t stress if your mind wanders—just gently return to your breath.
- Try apps, YouTube, or podcasts if you’re looking for guided support.
Mindfulness Isn’t a Trend—It’s a Tool
These practices aren’t just “nice ideas”—they’re tools to help you feel calmer, clearer, and more connected to yourself. They’re small shifts that, when done consistently, can make a big difference to your physical and mental wellbeing.
And remember, this isn’t about perfection—it’s about intention.
